What the day looks like

Meet your guide in the courtyard, then head to our Creative Space to leave your bags and coats. Pupils will first visit the Harley Gallery to see the current contemporary exhibition. This could be anything from ceramics to sculpture, prints to portraiture. Pupils will learn about the artist and art on display, then be encouraged to look closer with our ‘treasure hunt’ trails and activities.

Pupils are welcome to bring a snack for this mid-morning break.

Your guide will show you around the museum exhibition, using a mix of activities to keep pupils engaged and thinking. We will cover the key themes of the exhibition, including portrait symbolism, women who made a difference, and where art materials come from.

Please ensure pupils bring a packed lunch and drink. There is a 5-minute walk up a road through the estate to reach the Education Studio.

Please pick from the following options:

Build your own treasure box
Build and decorate a box to keep your personal treasures in, inspired by the cabinets on display in the Portland Collection.

Create a portrait frame
Design and produce your own ornate 3D gold frame to mount a personal photo in (please bring the children’s class photos printed out to A6 size if possible!)

Clay creatures
Build an animal out of clay, inspired by the Harley family’s historic menagerie.

Fashion a hat (KS2 only)
Inspired by the hats in our collection, and Duchess Winifred’s fight against feathers, create your own towering headpiece and become a fashion icon.

Work with an artist (extra charges apply)
Book a workshop with one of our Harley Studio Artists, and try your hand at printing, upcycling clothes, recycled sculpture, metalwork, jewellery or ceramics.

Time to tidy up, visit the toilet, and carefully carry your new creation back to the Courtyard, before getting on the coach.

We hope we will see you again!

KS1 teacher testimonial

‘We loved all of the program of activities – it was such a fantastic opportunity for our KS1 learners to view actual artwork; allowing them to see/appreciate scale, texture, detail and how varied art can be. The Portland Museum visit also ignited the creativity ahead of the clay workshop, enabling them to connect animal choices and ideas for their own work of art!’
