Looking for a completely unique Christmas gift? Then perhaps one of Carole Glover’s slipware pots is just the thing!
Carole Glover’s meticulous ceramics are directly influenced by 16th and 17th Century slipware. A challenging yet creative technique little employed by contemporary potters today. In fact, a quick Google search for UK slipware ceramics puts Carole’s website at the top of a very short list.
Yet while the technique of slipware inspires her surface decorations, her forms are inspired by the natural world. Birds, bears and cat forms are hand built or thrown on a homemade wheel and decorated using a limited palette of just four colours. Her work is unique and full of beautifully observed detail.
There is a lot of humour and practical sense in her work too. Little egg cups are topped with bird lids as if they are sitting on nests. While her water jugs are turned into owls or badgers complete with removable heads which when upturned are cups to drink from.
“My slip decorating includes a variety of techniques; trailing, pouring, dipping, brushing, sponging, jewelling and feathering. Using these techniques, I can achieve a wide range of tones and hues to what appears to be a limited colour palette.”
Carole trained at Derby University and after graduation set up her studio in Stafford. She has exhibited her work across the UK including at The Victoria and Albert Museum Shop, London.
