Proclaimed cat addict, Emily has ventured over to the dog side and created a collection of ceramic canine portraits for our Gallery Shop to coincide with our exhibition A Dog’s Life.
At the age of 20, venturing on an art school trip to Paris, Emily believed she met Jim Morrison reincarnated as a plump ginger and white cat sat on his grave and being adored by women. This started a 25-year fascination and journey into making ceramic portraits of cats, and some other animals alongside too.
Made in stoneware clay, each wall-based portrait is unique and influenced by Emily’s lively imagination and enjoyment of the ridiculous in everyday life. They are not designed to be realistic tributes to their animal inspiration; they are caricatures that capture endearing and funny expressions and character.
Emily lives in Bournemouth, working from her garden studio under the scrutinising eye of her two company Directors, cats Lollypop and Sweetiepie. Although she escapes the furry domination by swimming in the sea on Fridays!
“I love to make amusing, colourful, performative ceramics that make people laugh and smile. Inspired by my curious imagination, combined with animal and people watching.”
