Graeme Hawes

Graeme Hawes’ glass has been a regular and popular features in the Harley Shop for many years. From his studio in the heart of Leicester’s cultural quarter, Graeme has combined a career as an artist and commercial designer.

He uses traditional glassmaking techniques to create his signature halo-shaped forms which have been the most sought after popular of his collections at the Harley Shop. Graeme blows his halos before cutting and polishing their surfaces to create faceted and layered sculptures. Each is a unique combination of colour, surface pattern and internal decoration.

Graeme has an interest in experimenting with materials and leveraging the relationship between light and colour to create reflections and cast coloured shadows. Alongside his work for galleries, Graeme also works on large scale lighting projects for hotels and chandelier companies.

“I am captivated by the hostile environment of a glassblowing workshop. There is heat oozing from every aperture. There is a deafening noise from the compressors and burners. There is broken glass strewn across the floor and yet there is the facility to create something beautiful and delicate.”
