Jill Ray

Jill Ray is a Sheffield based painter and digital artist. Her opposing mediums of oil paint on canvas and digital drawing offer Jill different ways of working; slow versus fast, subtle textures versus perfected geometry.

Surprisingly it is Jill’s digital work which is slow to create. She can spend up to three weeks working on a piece in Photoshop, but can complete a painting in a day!

The hills of the Dark Peak and the woodlands in Sheffield and Chatsworth Park provide most of Jill’s subject matter, with occasional winter forays to the English and Welsh coasts.

We first met Jill when she entered our Open Exhibition in 2015 with her entry Chatsworth Trees, Champion Alder which was incredibly popular with visitors. In 2018 Jill presented an equally popular solo show of her prints at the Harley, and we have continued to sell them in our shop ever since.

“I am fascinated by the way similar shapes and patterns echo and repeat in the landscape as can be seen in my prints and in a more subtle and textural exploration in my paintings.”
