Melanie is fascinated by spaces which are often neglected, found hidden between urban and rural places, often overgrown yet full of life which she calls Edgelands. These are strange, fragile and magical green corridors where wildlife thrives. Edgelands are abundantly found in Birmingham where Melanie works and lives and species commonly found there include the birds and butterflies, which are the inspiration for her brooches.
Melanie starts by creating a hand painted design before translating it digitally and hand-printing it onto steel. She then cuts, folds, solders, and shapes the metal into its finished form.
Alongside selling this collection of brooches, we commissioned Melanie to create a special brooch just for us. The Portland moth brooch is inspired by a species of moth named after Margaret Bentinck, 2nd Duchess of Portland, an exceptional 18th woman whose vast collections of natural history objects were rival to none.
“I visited the natural history museum to see the Portland moth before creating intricate designs in paint. The designs are then hand printed onto tinned steel, which gleams through the design giving each moth a jewel like intensity.”
