Melvin Greasley is a self-taught mixed media artist and has been a member of the Worksop Society of Artists for over 20 years. Greasley has attended the Harley Foundation’s pottery studio in recent years, making ceramics that take inspiration from his own career in the coal mining industry.
Greasley was born in 1955 in Creswell, one of seven children. When he was 15 he started work at Creswell Colliery running errands for management and looking after the pit canaries, which were a legal requirement at the time. He started working at the coal face when he was 18, training one day a week at college to get a qualification in engineering. He worked at Thoresby Colliery and returned to Creswell as a District Deputy and captain of the Rescue Team.
Greasley retired from coalmining when the pit was closed in 1991. He went on to work in archaeology and power stations until retiring.
