Olivier Leger
We first saw Olivier’s impossibly detailed drawings in our 2015 Open Exhibition. His entry captured the judge’s eye, and he was awarded the main prize. Two years later Olivier presented his first solo exhibition here at the Harley, and he has continued to show and sell his work in our Gallery Shop since.
Working from his studio in Loughborough, Olivier draws subjects from the natural world, particularly ocean life. He is passionate about marine conservation and is a keen scuba diver, taking video and photographs which inspire his work. Back in the studio he likes to imagine his sea dwelling subjects as living planets or landmasses, with their own landscapes and ecosystems.
Using the finest of pens and brushes, he creates incredible levels of detail in his pieces – which can take months, sometimes years to complete. Always hidden in the detail is a little scuba diver to be found. The drawings are reproduced in limited edition giclee prints using top of the range equipment in his studio.
“My work celebrates the wonders of life in our oceans, but also holds up a mirror to the reality of its fragile state. So, in the details, you’ll see issues being represented like coral bleaching, plastic pollution and overfishing. We are at a critical juncture where the decisions we take now will determine the fate of our planet. I hope my work communicates the challenges and opportunities we face.”
