Penkridge Ceramics

Lorraine Taylor and Nicky Smart founded Penkridge Ceramics in 1984, in Walsall, West Midlands.

Their lifelike, hand-painted ceramics are considered the best in their field and have been on sale in our Gallery shop since it opened in 2000. Their most popular collection at the Harley is by far their tree nuts and leaves. The autumnal beauty of acorns, conkers and oak leaves, are held in stasis in ceramic.

These perfectly formed, ceramic flora and fauna are so life-like they are often mistaken for the real thing!

Each piece goes through six kiln-firings before being hand-painted and finished with carved wooden stalks or cast metal twigs, creating both colour and texture.

“Our influences lie in trompe l’oeil and early still life paintings of fruits, which demonstrate the beauty of organic forms.”
