Rachel Larkins is a designer maker who takes inspiration from museum collections and miniature paintings.
Sculpting tiny dioramas and portraits from her studio in the New Forest, Rachel creates wearable pieces influenced by miniature portraits, folklore and fairytales. These small-scale paintings are then encapsulated in resin and mounted as jewellery – so they can be held close by the wearer.
We were particularly drawn to Rachel’s work due to its playful and contemporary take on the miniature portrait – like those on display in our museum.
“I have always been drawn to objects behind glass; mourning jewellery holding hair; bell jars holding birds, insects, or dolls; dioramas and ships in bottles. The wearable pieces I make are influenced by the hidden stories of small-scale miniatures as well as by folklore and fairy tales.”
