Thomas Veryard

Thomas is one of our newest Harley Studio residents, moving to Welbeck last year to set up his contemporary furniture studio. Using sustainably sourced timber, Thomas designs and makes utilitarian pieces for the home and for public spaces.

He uses hand-tools and machinery from the 1940’s and 50’s to construct his work. Made in England, simple in construction and built to endure, these machines echo his furniture style, which is robust and designed to last many generations.

Thomas’ inspiration comes from a range of sources but mainly from vernacular furniture; domestic items crafted for specific functional purposes such as rush-seat chairs. Combining traditional making techniques with contemporary design elements results in beautifully elegant and simple forms, for modern living.

Most of his work is made-to-order, however from time to time he releases limited-edition batches of small pieces such the stools available in our shop. Thomas’s latest design is The Welbeck Windsor features a handwoven rush backrest woven by Ella Merriman, with materials harvested in Oxford. The seat itself is made from Welbeck Estate oak and the chainsaw marks made when it was felled, have been retained as a reminder of its origins.
