Explore the connections between the Welbeck Estate and coal mining – and celebrate the creativity of Nottinghamshire’s mining communities.
This exhibition brings together contemporary artworks with historic objects and archival material to explore Nottinghamshire’s mining heritage and Welbeck’s place within it.
From commemorative plates and pottery, to poetry and pencil sketches, you’ll discover work by former miners and members of the wider mining community. These personal, creative responses sit alongside archival records that reveal Welbeck’s historic relationship with the industry.
Welbeck Abbey, although a rural estate and home to the Dukes of Portland, greatly benefited from mining. The Dukes leased land to coal mining companies, receiving annual rent and royalties for every tonne of coal extracted, until coal was nationalised in 1946.
Objects and archival material for this exhibition have been loaned from several local organisations. With thanks to Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum, Nottinghamshire Mining Museum, Pleasley Pit Trust, The Oasis Centre, and Bassetlaw Museum.
