Get an introduction to pottery in this 3-session course for children aged 7-16 and their parent or guardian. This course will give children a taste of all the different ways to create with clay, from throwing on the potter’s wheel, to sculpting with slabs.

Saturday 18 January, 25 January + 8 February, 2pm – 3.30pm.
During the three sessions, children will experiment with a range of techniques and will produce at least one finished piece to be glazed and fired.
Techniques covered include:
Slab pots
Throwing on the potter’s wheel
Joining clay
Making handles
Decorating using underglazes
You will need
Family Clay is for children aged 7-16 and their parent or guardian. Parents or guardians must stay with their child at all times. No prior pottery experience is needed.
Children must be supervised closely whilst using the pottery wheel. Therefore, a maximum of two children per adult are allowed. If you are unsure whether this course is suitable for you, please contact our friendly education team education@harleyfoundation.org.uk.
We recommend trimming long nails prior to the session, removing any jewellery, and tying back long hair. Please bring your own aprons.
Additional information
The course cost includes all materials, tools and clay, plus glazing and firing of your finished pieces.
We will contact you when your pots are ready to collect from our museum, this can take up to 6 weeks. If you haven’t heard from us within this time, please contact us.
If your child is confident working independently, you can make your own creation by purchasing an ‘Accompanying Adult + Materials’ ticket rather than a free ‘Accompanying Adult’ ticket.
Meet the tutors
Ruth Waller
Ruth is a contemporary textile artist and half of the creative partnership Waller Hewett. Waller Hewett create artwork and installations which combine art, design and craft, and have won them numerous awards including ‘Best in Show’ at the London Craft Fair.
She is a highly experienced tutor and teaches across the Harley Foundation’s education programme.

Naomi Ameyaw
Naomi is a contemporary ceramicist who creates handmade, functional, and decorative pottery from her home studio in Nottingham. She creates her pieces using a combination of throwing and hand-building techniques.
Her work is heavily inspired by nature and she enjoys experimenting with found materials such as wild clay and glass.
