Family Workshop: Japanese Patchwork Pictures

For ages 7+
20 August 2026

Please note: This event has passed, please check What's On to see what we have coming up

Learn the contemporary Japanese artform of Kinusaiga or ‘patchwork without needles’ this summer.

You will learn

Often called ‘painting with fabric’, this textile art creates bright patterns and pictures without the use of needles or sewing. Combining elements of traditional textile techniques with modern materials and methods, it’s a fun and easy way to produce your own patchwork-style artworks.

Come along and be guided through the process this August as you make your own quilted patchwork style picture to put on your wall or give as a gift.

Techniques covered include:

Image design
Reusing fabric scraps
Laying out your design
Carving your design
Selecting and adding fabrics

You will need

This workshop is for children aged 7-16 and their parent or guardian; parents and guardians must stay with their child at all times.

You are welcome to bring along scrap cotton fabric to use as part of your design, but this is not essential.

Additional information

All materials and equipment for the session will be provided.

If your child is confident working independently, you can make your own creation by purchasing additional materials as a £12 add-on.
