Gallery Talk: The 5th Duke of Portland’s Landscape

with Lisa Gee
28 July 2023

Join us for the talk with Lisa Gee, Director of the Harley Foundation, and learn about the landscape developed by the Victorian 5th Duke of Portland.

The 5th Duke was famous for his building projects, including miles of tunnels and a subterranean ballroom. He also extensively redesigned the landscape around Welbeck Abbey, creating Welbeck Village and adding building such as the enormous Riding School, courtyard stables, and numerous picturesque lodges.

Lisa will speak about the 5th Duke’s building and landscaping projects, and will explore the connections between the history of the Welbeck estate and the contemporary sculpture exhibition by Lucille Lewin in the gallery next door.
