Develop your skills on the potter’s wheel in this weekly 4-part pottery course designed for improvers, or people who have attended our Introduction to Throwing course.
You will learn
We offer two different courses in the Improver’s Throwing series, each focusing on slightly different pots. Either course will build on the basic throwing and turning skills developed in our Introduction to Throwing course, and you can attend both to deepen and expand your knowledge.
Course options:
- Improver’s Throwing: Bowls
- Improver’s Throwing: Mugs
Both courses cover the different stages involved in throwing mug or bowl shapes, developing your turning and trimming techniques, and glazing your work. You’ll improve your confidence and control on the potter’s wheel, and by the end of the 4 weeks, you will have created a group of either larger thrown bowls or differently shaped mugs.

14 September: Mugs. This course focuses on throwing a range of mug shapes, trimming your pots and different types of handle making.
You will need
This session is perfect for those who have attended our Introduction to Throwing course, or anyone able to confidently throw and trim a cylinder on the potter’s wheel.
We recommend trimming long nails prior to the session, removing any jewellery, and tying back long hair.
Please note, pottery wheels are potentially harmful to a person who has a pacemaker because they produce a magnetic field when in use. By booking a ticket to this event you acknowledge this risk.
Additional information
This pottery course takes place over 4 consecutive weeks starting on your booked date.
There are just 5 places on each session, which will offer a high level of one-on-one teaching and a close-knit studio experience.
The course cost includes all materials, tools and clay, plus glazing and firing of your finished pieces.
Kyra Cane
This course is taught by Kyra Cane.
Kyra Cane is a potter who works from her Harley Foundation studio on the Welbeck estate in Nottinghamshire. She is a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association of Great Britain, a selected member of Contemporary Applied Arts, and now the Chair of the board of trustees for the Craft Pottery Charitable Trust.
She combined this with an academic career, teaching, leading the Harrow Ceramics degree course at the University of Westminster and examining at a range of institutions until 2017. She currently teaches a range of part-time courses at West Dean College in West Sussex and acts as a mentor and advisor to a range of organisations.
