Make your mark in our 6-week Introduction to Surface Decoration courses designed to give you a grounding in colour and decoration.
You will learn
We offer two different courses in the Introduction to Surface Decoration series, each focusing on slightly different techniques. Either course will give you the skills and confidence to create decorative surfaces on clay, and encourage you to find your unique artistic voice, but you can attend both to deepen and expand your knowledge.

- Introduction to Surface Decoration – Part A
- Introduction to Surface Decoration – Part B
Both courses will teach you how to make your own tools for mark making, about the difference between underglazes and slips, and how to combine techniques, creating a range of test tiles across the 6 weeks.
After experimenting and finding your unique artistic voice, you will have the opportunity to create a final piece showcasing your new skills.
Please note, Introduction to Surface Decoration – Part B is new to this series of introductory courses. If you attended an Introduction to Surface Decoration course before April 2026 – this was Part A. If you are unsure whether you have previously attended Part A or Part B, please email education@harleyfoundation.org.uk and we can find out for you.
Upcoming courses
12 June: Introduction to Surface Decoration – Part B. This course covers techniques including, but not limited to: creating your own textured rollers, textured surfaces using slips and moulds, water etching, block and screen printing.
You will need
These are adult courses, perfect for complete beginners, or those who have attended any of our other introductory courses. You must be aged 14+ to attend, all under 18’s must be accompanied by a paying adult.
We recommend trimming long nails prior to the sessions, removing any jewellery, and tying back long hair.
Additional information
These pottery courses take place over 6 consecutive weeks starting on your booked date unless stated otherwise.
Sessions take place on Friday mornings 10am – 12.30pm.
The course cost includes all materials, tools and clay, plus glazing and firing of your finished pieces.
Ruth Waller
This course is taught by Ruth Waller.
Ruth is half of the creative partnership Waller Hewett. Waller Hewett creates artwork and installations which combine art, design and craft, and has won them numerous awards including ‘Best in Show’ at the London Craft Fair.
She is a highly experienced tutor and teaches across the Harley Foundation’s education programme.
