What's On

Patchworks of Places

Drop-in community art project
18 January 2023 — 12 March 2023

Drop into our creative space
10am – 4pm
FREE

We invite you to get creative with the free materials and tools provided and make a bunting flag to add to our community art installation.

This activity is inspired by our new exhibition, ‘Well Travelled’, by textile artist Anne Kelly. Anne’s patchwork and embroidered textiles are a collection of memories, making, travel and textiles.

As you add to our bunting display, we invite you to celebrate your own special places, which could be real or imaginary.  Perhaps somewhere you’ve been – or somewhere you’d like to go.

Anne suggests ‘It’s helpful if you choose a theme, may a place or a time, or family memory that you would like to celebrate’

If you like, bring along some photos, sketches, or objects as inspiration. Then dig through our stocks of fabric and craft materials and get creative.

This interactive space is a great opportunity to stretch your crafting skills and use materials you might not have before.

When you’ve finished your flag, you are invited to add it to our community installation – creating a patchwork of special places which celebrates the creativity of our community.

At weekends you’ll be joined by one of the Harley’s textile artists, who’ll be happy to help you get hands on and learn some new textiles skills and techniques for free.

These will range from introductory embroidery skills to help you to graffiti your bunting, to printing and painting the fabric flags. There will also be handy takeaway resources with craft ideas for you to continue the fun at home.
