Pot Like Picasso with Dee Barnes

2-Day Pottery Course
19 — 20 August 2023

A 2-day pottery course perfect for those with some pottery experience looking to develop their clay skills further.

In this 2-day course, simple techniques such as slab building, coiling and press moulding will be used to create a piece of work inspired by Picasso’s own clay work. Whilst Picasso is famously known for his paintings, he also spent many years in Antibes creating incredible artworks in ceramic form.

Day 1 of the course will begin with an overview and an explanation of this vast body of work. You will study images and Dee will explain how Picasso’s pieces were made and decorated. You will then have the opportunity work through your own ideas and make one or more pieces using hand building techniques. Dee will be on hand to guide and assist you with your project.

Day 2 will involve what is possible with your decorative process. Dee will demonstrate techniques using slips and underglazes. You will then go onto decorate your own pieces with guidance and support from Dee.

Your work will be fired when dry, then glazed and fired a second time and for collection at a later date. Once your work is ready to collect, the Harley Foundation will let you know.

All materials including tools, clay, underglazes and glazes are included in the cost of this workshop. A Welbeck lunch will be provided on both days and is also included in the cost.

(Some experience of working with clay is essential for this workshop.)

Dee Barnes

Our 2-Day Pot like Picasso course is taught by Dee Barnes.

Dee grew up in London and studied at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. She says: ‘Who’d have thought, all these years later, my classical and contemporary dance training would inform the work I create today?’

Her yearning to create less ephemeral work led her first to the clay, then jewellery, and now she is back with a focus on clay in her every day practice.

She sells her hand-built ceramics and mixed media jewellery in shops and galleries in the UK, Europe and the USA.

Dee also teaches ceramics at Leicester University and Loughborough University. She can be found on the Crafts Council Directory and is an associate member of The Craft Potters Association.
