Beginner Pottery Courses

Feeling inspired by The Great Pottery Throwdown? Or maybe you’re simply looking for a new creative outlet? Our 6-week beginner courses at the Harley Pottery Studio are designed to help you take your first steps with clay in a supportive, hands-on environment.

When you’re starting out, there are three main ways to work with clay. Each of our courses focuses on one of these pathways:

  • Handbuilding – shaping clay using only your hands and simple tools, perfect for making bowls, vases, and sculptural pieces.

  • Throwing – using the potter’s wheel to create round, symmetrical forms such as mugs and bowls.

  • Decorating – the final stages to making any pot, after handbuilding or throwing your piece you’ll explore colour, texture, and glaze to personalise your pottery.

The Clay Basics

These pottery courses are a great introduction to handbuilding techniques. They will also cover preparing your clay, basic decorative techniques and how pots reach their final fired form. If you’ve never worked with clay before, these courses are the place to start!
